WHY JESUS REJECTS “GOOD CHRISTIANS” (MATTHEW 7:21-23 EXPLAINED)
"Not everyone who says to Me, 'Lord, Lord,' will enter the kingdom of heaven, but the one who does the will of My Father who is in heaven." (Matthew 7:21, ESV)
That's Jesus. Talking about Christians. Good Christians. Christians who prophesied, cast out demons, and did mighty works in His name. And His response?
"I never knew you; depart from Me, you workers of lawlessness." (Matthew 7:23, ESV)
If that doesn't make you stop and think, I don't know what will.
This isn’t about unbelievers. This isn’t about people who rejected Jesus. This is about people who called Him “Lord,” who did ministry in His name, who looked like they were doing everything right.
And Jesus says: “I never knew you.”
Not “I used to know you.” Not “I knew you, but you fell away.” I. NEVER. Knew. You.
So, what’s happening here? And what does this mean for us?
We’re going to break this down using a simple 3-step method: Observe, Interpret, Apply.
First, we’ll observe—slowing down to see what the text actually says, noticing details we might miss at a glance.
Then, we’ll interpret—asking what it meant to the first hearers, looking at context, and letting Scripture speak for itself.
Finally, we’ll apply—taking truth from the page and asking how it reshapes the way we live today.
This isn’t about adding layers of complexity. It’s about slowing down enough to let God’s Word do what it is meant to do: pierce through assumptions and lead us into obedience.
Let’s dig in.
OBSERVATION—what does the text say?
Let's look at what Jesus actually says in Matthew 7:21-23.
21 “Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but the one who does the will of my Father who is in heaven. 22 On that day many will say to me, ‘Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name, and cast out demons in your name, and do many mighty works in your name?’ 23 And then will I declare to them, ‘I never knew you; depart from me, you workers of lawlessness.’ (Matthew 7:21-23, ESV)
WHAT WE SEE:
When you slow down and look at what the text actually says, here's what you notice:
1. These people called Jesus "Lord"
They didn't reject Him. They claimed Him. Twice. "Lord, Lord." That's repetition for emphasis. They acknowledged His authority.
2. They prophesied in His name
This isn't casual Christianity. These are people who spoke on behalf of God. They delivered messages. They taught. They had a platform.
3. They cast out demons in His name
Spiritual warfare. Deliverance ministry. They saw results. Demons left. People were freed.
4. They did many mighty works in His name
Miracles. Signs. Wonders. Things that looked like the power of God.
5. Jesus says: "I never knew you"
Not "I don't know you anymore." Not "You used to be Mine." But "I NEVER knew you." From the beginning. The whole time. Never.
6. Jesus calls them "workers of lawlessness"
They weren't just ineffective. They were operating in rebellion. Lawlessness = living outside God's will.
KEY DETAILS:
✅ The phrase "on that day" refers to Judgment Day (Matthew 7:22)
✅ These people are surprised (they genuinely believed they were saved)
✅ Jesus doesn't dispute their works (He doesn't say "You didn't really prophesy" or "Those weren't real miracles")
✅ The issue isn't WHAT they did — it's WHO they obeyed
INTERPRETATION—what does it mean?
CONTEXT:
This passage sits at the end of the Sermon on the Mount (Matthew 5-7). Jesus has just finished teaching about:
✅ The Beatitudes (Matthew 5:3-12)
✅ Salt and light (Matthew 5:13-16)
✅ Fulfilling the Law (Matthew 5:17-48)
✅ True righteousness vs. performance (Matthew 6:1-18)
✅ Two masters (Matthew 6:24)
✅ Judging rightly (Matthew 7:1-6)
✅ Ask, seek, knock (Matthew 7:7-11)
✅ The narrow gate (Matthew 7:13-14)
✅ False prophets (Matthew 7:15-20)
And now He closes with this: doing without obeying is not enough.
THE PROBLEM:
These people had:
✅ The right WORDS ("Lord, Lord")
✅ The right WORKS (prophecy, deliverance, miracles)
✅ The right NAME (they did it all "in Your name")
But they were missing one thing:
Obedience to the Father's will.
Matthew 7:21 (ESV):
"Not everyone who says to Me, 'Lord, Lord,' will enter the kingdom of heaven, but the one who does the will of My Father who is in heaven."
The dividing line isn't:
❌ How much you believed
❌ How powerful your ministry was
❌ How many people you reached
The dividing line is:
Did you DO the will of the Father?
WHAT IS THE FATHER'S WILL?
Jesus tells us earlier in the Sermon on the Mount:
Matthew 7:24-27 (ESV):
"Everyone then who hears these words of Mine and does them will be like a wise man who built his house on the rock. And the rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house, but it did not fall, because it had been founded on the rock. And everyone who hears these words of Mine and does not do them will be like a foolish man who built his house on the sand. And the rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell, and great was the fall of it."
Translation:
Hearing + Doing = Wise
Hearing + NOT Doing = Foolish
The Father's will is simple:
Hear what Jesus says. Do what Jesus says.
Not just:
❌ Believe it
❌ Preach it
❌ Do ministry in His name
But:
✅ OBEY IT.
CROSS-REFERENCES:
James 2:17 (ESV):
"So also faith by itself, if it does not have works, is dead."
James 2:24 (ESV):
"You see that a person is justified by works and NOT by faith alone."
1 John 2:3-4 (ESV):
"And by this we know that we have come to know Him, if we keep His commandments. Whoever says 'I know Him' but does not keep His commandments is a liar, and the truth is not in him."
Luke 6:46 (ESV):
"Why do you call Me 'Lord, Lord,' and not do what I tell you?"
WHAT JESUS IS SAYING:
You can:
✅ Call Me "Lord"
✅ Do ministry in My name
✅ See miracles, cast out demons, prophesy
But if you don't OBEY what I've commanded, I never knew you.
This is terrifying.
And it should be.
Because it exposes the danger of performance-based Christianity — doing religious activities while living in disobedience.
APPLICATION—what does this mean for you?
THE QUESTION YOU NEED TO ASK:
Am I calling Jesus "Lord" but living like He's optional?
Let's get specific.
1. ARE YOU OBEYING JESUS' COMMANDS?
Jesus gave clear commands. Not suggestions. Not recommendations. Commands.
Matthew 28:19-20 (ESV):
"Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you."
Have you been baptized as a believer?
If not, why not?
Acts 2:38 (ESV):
"Repent and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins."
Acts 22:16 (ESV):
"And now why do you wait? Rise and be baptized and wash away your sins, calling on His name."
Baptism isn't optional. It's not "just a symbol." It's a command.
If you're skipping it, you're living in disobedience — no matter how much ministry you do.
2. ARE YOU LIVING IN KNOWN SIN?
1 John 3:6-10 (ESV):
"No one who abides in Him keeps on sinning; no one who keeps on sinning has either seen Him or known Him... Whoever makes a practice of sinning is of the devil... No one born of God makes a practice of sinning."
This isn't about perfection. It's about DIRECTION.
Are you walking toward holiness or walking toward sin?
Are you fighting sin or making peace with it?
Hebrews 10:26-27 (ESV):
"For if we go on sinning deliberately after receiving the knowledge of the truth, there no longer remains a sacrifice for sins, but a fearful expectation of judgment."
You can't claim Jesus as Lord and live like He doesn't have authority over your life.
3. ARE YOU DOING MINISTRY BUT IGNORING OBEDIENCE?
This is the trap these people fell into.
They:
✅ Prophesied
✅ Cast out demons
✅ Did mighty works
But they were workers of lawlessness.
Translation:
They did ministry THEIR way, not GOD'S way.
You can:
✅ Lead a small group
✅ Serve in the nursery
✅ Preach on Sundays
✅ Run a Christian podcast or YouTube channel
And still be living in disobedience.
Ministry is not a substitute for obedience.
Romans 2:13 (ESV):
"For it is not the hearers of the law who are righteous before God, but the doers of the law who will be justified."
4. DO YOU KNOW JESUS, OR DO YOU JUST KNOW ABOUT HIM?
Jesus didn't say, "I never heard of you."
He said, "I never KNEW you."
Knowing Jesus isn't about:
❌ Believing the right theology
❌ Attending the right “church”
❌ Saying the right prayer
Knowing Jesus means:
✅ Following Him
✅ Obeying Him
✅ Walking with Him daily
John 10:27 (ESV):
"My sheep hear My voice, and I know them, and they follow Me."
If you're not following, He doesn't know you.
the bottom line:
Jesus doesn't reject "bad" people who know they need Him.
He rejects "good" people who think they don't.
He rejects people who:
✅ Called Him "Lord" but didn't obey Him
✅ Did ministry but ignored His commands
✅ Looked religious but lived in rebellion
So here's the question:
Are you calling Jesus "Lord" — and LIVING like He's Lord?
Or are you just saying the word?

We just walked through fire together. Now the question is: what will you do with the information you were given?
My hope is that you will: Test it. Pray over it. Obey it.
In the meantime, stay rooted. Bear fruit. Test everything.
